Like, OMG Commercials VOL. 1

I had this fantastic idea to release a blog once a week. The only problem was, I was so excited about this new blog idea for next week, I didn't want to wait so I'm releasing it now. So feel privileged.

Commercials have been around forever. Since the dawn of mankind. The first commercials were found on the wall of caves, playing on repeat, for thousands of years. They tell us about our deepest most desires. They tell us about who we really are as people....

All joking aside. I love commercials. While most people fast forward them on TiVo or get angry while waiting for their YouTube video to start playing, I've always been intrigued by them. Mostly in part its how a Filmmaker can tell an effective story to a consumer in less than 30 seconds. From how its cut/edited together, to special effects and writing.

"Like, OMG Commercials VOL. 1" is comprised of all my favorite commercials I've seen. I decided to make volumes, because as I was writing down all my favorite commercials I began realizing there are way to many to cram into one blog. Plus you probably wont want to sit and watch my favorite commercials for 2 hours straight when Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, and Republican National Convention is on.

Anyways, for each commercial, I'll write a little side note why I added it. Enjoy, and remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, and G+.

Old Spice | The man your man could smell like.
This literally was a no brainier. Its pretty self explanatory why this is an instant favorite. From the writing to the one shot sequence and all the surprises in between?
I'm on a horse.

VW | Singin' in the rain.
I actually first saw this spot online a few years back and this became an instant classic. To this day im still quite impressed how they were able to pull this off. Take Gene Kelly's original face, and... well if you haven't seen this I wont ruin it. But enjoy. :)

Budlight | Vroom Vroom Party Starter.
Maybe its because I'm biased towards Conan O' Brian ( I think he is the one of the greatest comedic TV show host of all time) but I genuinely love this. You can totally tell Conan had a hand in writing this.

Heineken | The date.
Lately if you have been reading my blogs you've seen I have really been diggin' the sixties retro style lately. All the more reason why I love this. Its classy, bold and has awesome dancing. Not to mention the music at the end.

Toyota | Rav 4
Now I'm not really sure if this is a real commercial from Toyota or not, but its definitely not your average commercial. The things we do in the name of love. Favorite part is when the husband fakes his wife out. Priceless.

Stella Artois | Respect
This is the commercial that made me want to blog this article. I LOVE commercials like this spot. Where it really begins to become something else than just a commercial. Though this is not as energetic, this almost has the same feel as the previous Heineken commercial, including quirky dancing. I'm not quite sure why I am attracted to this (era/style/tone) recently but this spot is SO well done. Classy, retro, fun and shot extremely well, this by far is one of my favorite commercials of all time.

BMW films | The Ticker.
In 2001 and 2002 something magical happened. BMW was one of the first companies to do something completely unprecedented. Take real world renown filmmakers (David Fincher, Ridley and Tony Scott, Guy Ritchie, Joe Carnahan just to name a few) give them a budget and let them create short films promoting there new line of vehicles. From 2001 and 2002 BMW release 8 shorts. The result? BMW saw their 2001 sales numbers go up 12% from the previous year. Which is huge when your talking about millions of dollars in revenue. Though this may not technically be commercial, it really blurs the line between advertisement and film. I was such a big fan, I bought the official DVD with all the shorts on it. With enough digging on YouTube you can find the 7 other shorts.

 Skittles Commercials | Playlist
If I were to give out the most original award for not just one commercial, but an entire series of commercials, Skittles would win hands down. There are so many good commercials ranging from a man that everything he touches turns to Skittles to a man whose beard feeds him Skittles. Luckily enough, someone awesome on YouTube comprised a 30 video playlist of Skittles best and most famous commercials. Sit back grab some Skittles and enjoy.

Hope you enjoyed Like, "OMG Commercials Vol. 1"
Keep an eye out for "Like, OMG Commercials Vol. 2" coming soon.

EgoFest 2012

It's 2012. A new year. Its spring. Well, okay - maybe it isn't, but when you live up in Minnesota, optimism doesn't hurt.

Anyways, through a chain of events, I've been asked to help out with EgoFest 2012. My response? Hells yes. Can't say too much but it may involve [_________]. If you don't know what EgoFest is, to put it in short (no pun intended) its a short film festival where filmmakers from the Midwest and the rest of the nation can celebrate their work, win awards, network and eat really good food. Seriously, from what I hear they are gunna have some really good food. Anyways the application deadline is past but if you are still interested in submitting your film I maybe be able to squeeze your film in.

My Showreel 2011

I would like to proudly present my showreel of 2011. A lot of hard work and awesome people help make this happen. Lets make 2012 even better. Hope you enjoy. :)

Inspiration via 60's

No. I'm not dead. Although I haven't written a new post in nearly month, I have been working on a lot of cool side projects and have been finding inspiration in lots of different places. I've also been working on my show-reel for 2011. It's coming out really awesome. I decided for my intro name and info I would try to animate it in an old school design. A lot of my show-reel has a retro vintage feel. (no I'm not talking about the cliche hipster look ;) Even the music by Mt Eden entitled Sioman Says (which is the soundtrack i used for my 2011 show-reel) has an awesome feel and tone.

One art style I've really been diggin lately is that of the 1960's. I'm not sure if its been the fact that I've been listening to the black keys on a daily bases, or because I have been watching films recently from that era. But the 1960's had such a unique style and an explosion of innovation that impacted the motion graphic industry for years to come.

Here are a few of the video clips that I do have say are quite inspiring.

Money, briefcase, van. Need i say more? Probably, but i wont.
